His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, the throne holder 37 of the Drikung Kagyu lineage and the seventh reincarnation of the Chetsang Rinpoche, is a manifestation of Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara). Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Konchog Tenzin Kunsang Thrinle Lhundrup, was born in 1946 in the Tsarong aristocratic family in Lhasa. Many auspicious signs and visions accompanied his birth. His reincarnation was unequivocally confirmed by a vision of the Drikung Regent, Tritsab Gyabra Rinpoche, and by numerous additional divinations, among others by Taktra Rinpoche, the ruler of Tibet, SS the 16th Karmapa and SS Taklung Matrul.
His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chungtsang is subsequent to the foundation of the Drikung Kagyu lineage by Lord Jigten Sumgon, the 36th Throne Holder and the eighth reincarnation of the Chungtsang Rinpoche. It is considered a manifestation of Manjushri.
Drikung Kyabgon Chungtsang, also known as Tenzin Chokyi Nangwa, was born in 1942 in the year of the water horse Lhokha. He is the youngest of the five children of the well-known and aristocratic Lhagyari family. His father was Trichen Kelsang Nyendrak and his mother Rigzin Chodzom. The Lhagyari family is one of the oldest noble houses in Tibet and comes from the former royal family. This branch of the family is named Dewa Lhagyari Trichen.
Shortly after the premature death of the seventh Chungtsang Rinpoche, Tenzin Chökyi Jungne (1909-1940), his reincarnation was found in the Lhagyari family and enthroned in 1946 in the Drikung Thil monastery. His reincarnation was accompanied by many auspicious signs. The prophecies and the inclusion of an oracle confirmed his rebirth. Gyabra Tritsab had a vision in Lake Lhamo Latso, which was confirmed by other prophecies of SS 16th Karmapa and SS Taklung Matrul. The Tibetan government also certified its reincarnation, and Chungtsang passed the traditional tests of selection of religious items belonging to his previous reincarnation.
